A “chimera” is a mythical beast, a living being consisting of parts from different origins, and it encapsulated the idea of a mirage or a dream out of reach.
“Chimera” captures the multifaceted and visceral vision of our mandate which manifests in three areas of Canadian contemporary dance: creation, production, and education.
A. To educate and increase the public’s understanding and appreciation of the arts by providing performances of an artistic nature in public places, senior citizens' homes, churches, community centers, and educational institutions and by providing seminars on topics relating to such performances.
B. To provide instructional seminars on topics related to the performing and visual arts.
C. To produce arts festivals for the purposes of educating and advancing the public’s understanding and appreciation of performing arts and to educate artists through participation in such festivals and related workshops.
The primary driver of the organization is the creation of new dance – work that deepens understanding and appreciation of art. We also, necessarily, push and deepen our own understanding in this process. Currently, (and for many years now) we are working with Indigenous artists and elders to decolonize our creation processes, to make work in friendship and respectful relationship between Western and Indigenous ways. Much of the work is internal within the company, but there is also a public manifestation that fulfills the first part of our mandate. As an example, Chimera brought art such as ‘Trickster’s Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Bears, Sun and Starts’ into schools and camps to connect with youth.
Our company’s activities include many workshops and education programs for youth and their teachers, in order to fulfill the second part of our mandate. In fulfillment of the third part of our mandate, Chimera has produced endeavors such as the Fresh Blood Festival for many years. The covid pandemic forced a hiatus of the festival, and also an opportunity to reflect and develop more sustainable ways of connecting artists and the arts community.
Our vision is to be recognized as one of Canada's top dance companies because of our excellence, explosive athleticism, innovation, and authentic connection with audiences.
